YOGA
Yoga is a philosophy of life, which also
has the potential to create a healthy body and mind.
Ashtanga yoga, practiced in its correct sequential
order, gradually leads the practioner to rediscover his/her full
potential on all levels of human consciousness - physical, psychological
and spiritual. Through
this practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi Pranayama), postures
(asanas), and gazing point (driste), we gain control of the senses
and a deep awareness of ourselves. By maintaining this discipline
with regularity and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and
mind.
Ashtanga yoga uses a method of coordination
of breath and movement, which is known as vinyasa. For each movement, there is one
breath and therefore, all asanas are assigned a certain number
of vinyasas. When this method is combined with energetic
muscular "locks" called bandhas, the resulting practice
is very powerful.
One feels the benefits of the practice in a short time. The postures
and vinyasas help to detoxify, heal and relax the body and mind,
and bring new vitality and awareness to the practitioner.

MYSORE STYLE ASHTANGA
VINYASA SELF-PRACTICE
Mysore style is the way Ashtanga yoga is
introduced and taught in Mysore, India by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois
and his grandson Sharath Rangaswami. Students work individually at their level and
pace. Mysore style is a daily practice, and students are expected to show up to class daily except Saturdays. The teacher gives one to one assistance, adjustment
and instruction within this group environment and students are
introduced to new postures when they are ready. This style
of teaching makes Astanga yoga accessible to all levels of students.

MAYA AHU KARAN
Maya began to practice yoga while she was
working as an economist in Istanbul. She began to realize the stillness yoga created
in her mind and gradually, yoga began to be a part of her life. Afterwards,
while she spent a year in London doing a masters degree in Social
Anthropology, she began Mysore style Ashtanga Vinyasa Self-Practice
classes. The quiet classes in a group environment, with
one to one help of the teacher and the rooting effect of the
practice before the beginning of the day enchanted Maya. With
her teacher Cary's request, Maya also began assisting her teacher
in Mysore classes and she began to experience yoga from a different
perspective. The same year, she went to India and studied
with Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath for a
month and a half and in 2008 September for 2 months in Mysore, India. In the summer of 2007,
she completed 200 hour Teacher Training of Tias Little. Same year,
she completed Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series Adjustment Clinic
taught by Nancy Gilgoff. She studied with her main teacher Rolf Naujakot in India
for two months at the end of 2007 and the beginning
of 2008, and for 3 months at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009. Maya is continuing her training with her
teachers Rolf and Marci Naujokat, R. Sharath and Tias.
